# Fire a pipeline on a schedule or on demand

:::note
This tutorial is a stub. The mechanisms it covers are documented today under
[Schedule triggers](/triggers/schedule) and [Manual triggers](/triggers/manual).
:::

A pipeline runs automatically on a `schedule:` cron expression, and any pipeline
runs on demand whether or not it declares one. A scheduled pipeline can be fired
immediately, outside its cron, with `bento trigger schedule <name>`; any pipeline
fires with `bento trigger fire <name>`.

This lesson will contrast the two end to end. Until it lands, see:

* [Schedule triggers](/triggers/schedule) — the 5-field cron format and repo
  checkout.
* [Manual triggers](/triggers/manual) — on-demand firing and typed inputs.
* [CLI / Triggers](/cli/triggers) — `bento trigger fire` and
  `bento trigger schedule`.
